ingrid & i had many chats

a keenly intelligent autodidact

who'd lived most her life in state care

orphaned early, a refugee

she'd lived most her long life alone

we'd discuss my dad's health

& whether things were getting better or worse around the place

she'd tell me her earliest memories in germany

she was stoic so she didn't give much away

having no family & no vistors

was something long accustomed to

she never showed me her tears

she showed me instead her light
