Democracy must serve Human Rights

Democracy must serve Human Rights

This is where it stands now. & I would argue it is falling. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) protects Free Press, but now Google’s Blogger platform is introducing new censorship measures, for their AI bots to enforce what they call “Community Standards.” It’s happened before sure, & I’ve had poems blocked from free viewing before. But the new guidelines are another reducing concentric singular circle, further restrictions on Freedom of Expression. This is where it’s come to: poems banned, under the guise of protecting young people. Poems!

In an age where children watch live beheadings on video & hard core porn, poems which give people emotional & cognitive skills to cope with the ever desensitizing effects of the modern state, while 10 year olds are held for 20 years in adult prisons, authoritarianism, genocide & war befall us, too numb & filled with hopelessness the 2 informing one another, poems which engender hope & resolve are banned.

It’s arguable that a poet’s every word is one big poem, in all the subtle & blunt manifestations that life & wit allows for.

Therefore to ban one poem is to ban the whole poem.

For a poet who has dedicated 40 years to the noble art, like his father before him, I have never made a cent. At present I’ve had something like 100,000 reads. Pretty good, by anyone’s standards, for an Australian poet.

Most poets in this country choose the parlour games favoured in the universities, where government grants determine what can & cannot be written. In effect, these poets work for the politicians. Might I remind you that in fact, politicians are meant to be servants of the public. An unholy mess!

This piece could go anyways

As long as it doesn’t talk about

Anything serious or deep or particularly funny

Like me in her fancy that?

Imagine if we overheard the preps

Talking in the boys dunnies?

That might make the censors blush too!

To blush is to feel

Feelings come before thoughts

Feelings make us human

Humans have universal rights to Free Press

Lest we fall into Third Reich/Stalinism again

In China it’s illegal to eat out on the street

In America people on the street pack heat

Our Cold Wars will only thaw

With Democracy to keep the flame of freedom alight

Democracy must always serve Human Rights
