Friendship 2025

& so the ego defines itself in opposition to what it’s not we find ourselves hostile to much in this needy world in search of kindness but it’s not kindness we seek is it at least the kindness we receive often feels unpleasant because we have lost the art of receiving from nonintimates at least we need the context to be right for communication & we worry about what words they will use we are worried about words & try to find the right balance of sharing & receiving a souvenir without entering into a relationship we are worried about where things might go we do not want progression we wish to protect our current status we do not wish to add any more people into our list that list is closed at least unless the list is accidentally put into the washing machine still starting a new list is daunting we’ve gotta the get the balance of personalities right some introvert some extravert some thoughtful some funny some as broke as we are some who can shout us a beer but it takes a lot of time & so we walk lonely scrutinizing all clinging to the hope of a miracle that the stars align no better we pay a professional & can focus on ourselves talking we listen defensively a certain word will trigger us away it’s like we need to know who the person is before we can get to know them we assume the other to be a rotter or not quite the right fit & so we can’t enjoy anything fully that has no performance notes we enjoy the sunset because we’re told it is enjoyable no?

Babel is beautiful

Babel is beautiful   Covid really hurt Dad & me I was prevented from visiting him for two of his twilight years in Aged Care Which I do understand   Anyway, With his dementia By the time I finally saw him He’d deteriorated a good deal & death seemed to be approaching He was basically non verbal by now This dedicated ex-priest, school teacher & poet   One day at a visit soon after He seemed really ‘down’ He managed a couple of abortive monosyllables Over a few hours He seemed ‘not really there’ & then stunned me   He uttered “suic” I was shaken I thought my meditative father had finally lost out to despair As in “suicide”   For the next few days at work Teaching, following on from my father I had difficulty focussing & the word stuck with me Always in the back of my mind For his remaining 2 bedridden years & through the days of deep grief I received for him his death as...
